If you stand quietly in this building for just a moment, you can almost feel the generations who have worshiped here before you. The story of Brooksville Christian Church begins long before these walls existed—back in 1842, when a group of nearly 190 believers gathered with a simple dream. They wanted to be “Christians only,” guided by Scripture alone, with Jesus Christ as their cornerstone. That dream became the first organized church in Brooksville.
For the first 17 years, they met in the Bracken County Courthouse. Rain or shine, families walked into town, carrying their Bibles and their hopes for a church rooted in truth. In 1860, they built their first meeting house—a wooden structure made from local timber. It wasn’t fancy, but it was home. Over the next five decades, more than 500 people were baptized, and the congregation even helped plant another church in Powersville.
Then came a season of heartbreak. In 1923, a fire swept through the building, leaving little behind but a few charred pews, the pulpit, and the organ. Yet even in loss, God provided. The Baptist and Methodist churches opened their doors, and worship continued in borrowed spaces, theaters, and lodge halls. The church never missed a Sunday.
Within a year, the congregation built again. On June 15, 1924, they dedicated the very building that is standing today. Members gave sacrificially—so much so that the remaining debt was paid off that same day. The first communion service in the new sanctuary was held immediately afterward, a powerful symbol of hope rising from ashes.
Over the decades, the building changed and grew. The bell tower came down, the baptistry was replaced, and the balcony was removed. In 2010, thanks to a generous gift from Richard Hause, the church expanded with a fellowship hall, kitchen, classrooms, offices, and an elevator—spaces that continue to bless the congregation today.
But the story of Brooksville Christian Church isn’t just about buildings. It’s about people. It’s about worship that blends old hymns and new songs. It’s about church picnics, Women’s Banquets, Fall Retreats, Thanksgiving dinners, and Christmas decorating parties. It’s about PrimeTime gatherings for older adults and youth trips to Camp Northward. It’s about musicals, plays, and special worship nights that have filled this place with laughter, music, and praise.
It’s also a story of service. For years, members have led worship at the Chatham nursing home, supported families in need, partnered with local ministries, and hosted community events like the Easter Egg Hunt and Halloween Extravaganza. Mission teams have traveled to Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, and across the United States. Young men and women from this congregation have gone on to serve in ministry and missions.
And the story continues.
Since celebrating its 175th anniversary, the church has weathered the challenges of COVID‑19 and grieved the loss of several beloved members. There were seasons when things felt uncertain and heavy. But through it all, God remained faithful. In recent years, new momentum has grown—fresh energy, renewed hope, and a sense that God is writing the next chapter with purpose.
Today, Brooksville Christian Church still stands on the same foundation laid in 1842:
Jesus Christ, the chief cornerstone.
Methods may change, but the message remains the same—salvation is found in Christ alone.
And as we look ahead, we do so with gratitude for the past, joy in the present, and confidence that God will continue to use this church to shine His light in Brooksville and beyond.
