A Brief History of the Brooksville Christian Church
The Brooksville Christian Church was begun on October 31, 1842. It was the first church of any communion in the city of Brooksville and was to become the second oldest Christian church in Bracken County. A statement of purpose signed by one hundred ninety people contains the following:
”The Christian Church at Brooksville was constituted October 31, 1842. The Church at Brooksville is built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ being the chief cornerstone. We whose names are undersigned agree to take the old and new testament Scriptures for the rule of our faith and practices, believing that they are sufficient to govern the church in all things.”
Some of the last names listed are Marshall, Day, Fronk, Daugherty, Mofford, Hamilton, Ware, Poe, Weaver, Browning, Woods, Wallin, and others
In 1873, sixty members left with consent to begin the Christian Church in Powersville.
The pioneer congregation met in the courthouse for 17 years. In 1859 a building lot was purchased from F.M. Dora for $100. Its location is where the present building stands. The first house of worship was erected in 1860. It was a wood frame structure measuring 40 foot wide by 60 foot long. This building was greatly enlarged and remodeled in 1916.
The congregation only used this building for seven years. At 1:00 p.m. on February 18, 1923, the church building caught fire and burned. Some of the furnishings were able to be salvaged and are still in use in some of the Sunday school rooms. The present brick building was dedicated on June 15, 1924. Some changes have been made to the building over the years. The bell tower was removed due to decaying lumber. A new baptistry was added in the early 1960s and the semi circular balcony was removed. An entrance ramp was added in 1990 and the interior was redecorated in 1993.
Today the church stands for the same purpose as it was started. "The purpose of said congregation shall be to conduct a church which is known among religious bodies as the undenominational Christian Church, and whose members are known as Christians only...” (Article of Incorporation, July 30, 1968)
